A Lomi Lomi massage session (usually 90 minutes) can be very intense on a physical, psychological and spiritual level. Lomi Lomi is characterised by long, fluid, rhythmic, dance-like strokes using the forearms, elbows and knuckles as well as hands, mixed with gentle streching and rotation to loosen the joints, as well as elements of accupressure and traditional Swedish massage. A full Lomi Lomi session will give attention to the whole body – the head, neck, hands and feet as well as the torso and limbs.
The experience is designed to calm and remove tension from the whole body, putting the person being massaged into a state of deep relaxation. For some, this can approach a trance-like state. On a physical level Lomi Lomi massage stimulates blood circulation, digestion, bone and urogenital systems. It can help to reduce pain and nervous tension. On the spiritual level it unblocks energy channels and in a natural way supports the mental wellbeing of the person on the table.
Lomi Lomi requires the massage therapist to be in the right frame of mind, to approach the session with intentions of love and healing. The therapist must understand the needs of the person being massaged, to empathise with and as far as possible be in harmony with them. We massage people, not chunks of meat.
The purpose of Lomi Lomi is to integrate body and spirit, to produce a sense of space, peace and stillness in mind and body. Regular sessions support psychophysical balance, enhancing wellbeing and the ability to cope in difficult situations. You feel more grounded, focused and alive.
On a more practical and mundane level, a Lomi Lomi massage is simply a great way to give yourself a treat.
To best meet your needs I need to know what they are. Each session starts with a brief discussion of what you want out of the massage, any issues going on in your life, such as work stress for example, or any physical problems or conditions you specifically want addressed. The conversation will also cover your current health and any other treatments you might be undergoing or medication you might be taking.
Generally, I play music during a massage. This can be music of your choice, or a selection of relaxing, non-intrusive music on my iPod.
Traditionally in Lomi Lomi, the person being massaged is naked. You don't have to be, and even if you choose to be naked I use light drapes to cove>r your body, leaving uncovered just the part that I am massaging at the time. You will never be fully exposed, and I will leave the room while you change before and after the massage.
It is important that you feel confident and trust me to give you a safe, relaxing and rejuvenating massage. Therefore, please do call me beforehand to chat about what to expect and what you would like out of the session, especially if you have not been massaged before.
